Science of Propagation Vol. 5: Hybridization
NEW
Volume Five of this series focuses on the mechanisms and benefits of plant hybridization. By observing cross-pollination techniques on tomatoes and day lilies, students will be able to replicate or even find new applications for this technology. Hybridization can invigorate plant varieties, and it is also a natural way to create entirely new kinds of plants. By breeding plants from closely related parents, we can improve disease resistance and modify the color, form and flavor of existing species and varieties. This DVD provides a quick review of plant anatomy terms. We then guide viewers step-by-step through the process of selecting suitable parents, cross pollination, emasculation, isolation, seed harvesting, sowing, transplanting and finally evaluating the new hybrid&rsq;s character. Students will easily grasp the skill of hand pollination. After learning the principles of plant hybridization, you will be able improve the fruits, vegetables and landscape plants so vital to our health and our environment. 28 min.

Introduction To Botany
Introduce students to the science of botany. This subject is examined from adaptation to life on land, through modern plants and human dependency and interaction ith the plant kingdom. Lab experiments that can easily be duplicated in the classroom illustrate plant structure and transport. Learn the plant kingdom via the organizing principles of plant classification and the development of modern land plants. Plant families, growth and development, soil and nutrition, tranport and movement, and natural cycles relating to plant life are all examined.
Chapters include Adaptations to Land, Non-Vascular Plants, Gymnosperms, Angiosperms, Structure and Growth of Vascular Plants, Movement and Response, Nutrition, and Plants and the Future. 2 DVDs, 50 minutes total.

Cells: The Structure of Life DVD
This program explains the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and then explores in detail the structure and function of the major organelles found in eukaryotic cells. Examined organelles include: the nucleus, ribosomes, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi complex, lysosomes, chloroplasts, mitochondria, plastids, contractile and central vacuoles, cilia, flagella and the microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments that make up the cytoskeleton. The program concludes by looking at how cellular shape varies with cellular function. 32 min.

Glycolysis and Cellular Respiration: The Biology of Energy
This DVD looks first at the processes of glycolysis and fermentation. The program then looks in detail at cellular respiration beginning with the structure of mitochondria. Following the entry of pyruvic acid into the mitochondrial matrix and the formation of acetyl CoA, the program continues with an in-depth examination of the citric acid cycle. An exploration of the endosymbiotic hypothesis which offers an explanation of how photosynthesis and cellular respiration arose in eukaryotic cells concludes the program.

Plant Taxonomy
What is the difference between a plant species and a sub-species, and how are those plants related to hybrids, varieties and forms? These questions have often created frustration and confusion between botanists, horticulturists and scientists. Finally there is a detailed video which explains the systems for naming, classifying and identifying plants. Plant Taxonomy: The Universal Language, is a video program which covers many related topics including scientific nomenclature, classification, identification and field botany. The first half of the program starts by introducing viewers to the internationally recognized system of binomial nomenclature developed by Carl Linnaeus(1707-1778). While older models of classification are based on plant morphology, this program also presents new systems based on recent molecular findings. See how plant samples and records are stored in a modern herbarium. Text graphics make it easy for students to grasp the many rules which are used when recording plant names. The second half of the video shows how to develop observation skills for recognizing plant families in gardens and natural environments. Clear and readable text is shown as the narrator presents the terms used to describe flowers and leaves. These terms are repeated as students see how to identify flowering plant families and species. Dichotymous keys are shown alongside video images which help to illustrate the key terms and definitions as they are being narrated. Extensive graphics, clear examples, original music and beautiful photography make this program a powerful resource on this complex yet important topic. Two videos on one DVD. Part 1: 21 min. Part 2: 28 min

Kingdom Plantae DVD
This program starts by looking at the watery origins of modern land plants before looking at the adaptations that have evolved in plants and enabled them to spread to nearly every corner of the Earth. These adaptations include: roots, which anchor plants and absorb water and nutrients from the soil; vessels, that conduct water and nutrients throughout a plant; lignin, which stiffens and supports plants enabling them to grow taller; pollen, which frees plants from a dependence on water for reproduction; and fruits, which entice animals to unwittingly spread a plants seeds far and wide.

Photosynthesis: Transforming Light to Life DVD
Our Photosynthesis DVD documents how scientists unraveled the mystery of photosynthesis. It then examines the structural adaptations in leaves that facilitate photosynthesis, the nature of visible light, and the structure of chloroplasts. It then goes on to explain how the light dependent reactions that occur in photosystems I and II produce ATP and other high energy molecules that are then used to produce glucose via the light independent C3 and C4 cycles which are compared and contrasted to one another. 30 min.

Understanding Inheritance: Mendel, Method and Mapping
Our Mendel DVD delves into the fundamental aspects of genetic inheritance and how Mendel discovered the principles that form the foundation of modern genetics. The program first goes to Mendel‘s pea garden to investigate how Mendel came to propose the Laws of Dominance, Independent Assortment and Segregation and how those laws have been modified as a result of work done by those that followed Mendel.
